Zachariah Campbell
I received my H.B.Sc. in Neuroscience (Specialist) and Psychology (Major) from the University of Toronto Scarborough and my M.A. from the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto (Brain and Behaviour stream). I am currently completing my Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of Toronto of which includes involvement in the Clinical Extension in Neuropsychology program. My interests are somewhat wide ranging and involve structural/functional neuroanatomy, the history of psychology, abnormal psychology, behaviour modification and all aspects of clinical neuropsychology (e.g., forensic evaluation along with cognitive and psychological interventions).
Eliyas Jeffay
I am currently a PhD student in the Department of Psychology from University of Toronto. I received my Hons. B.Sc. at UTSC as a Neuroscience Specialist and Psychology Major and my M.A. from the Department of Psychology at UofT (Social, Personality and Abnormal Stream) in 2010. I have been working in Dr. Zakzanis's lab since Fall 2006 as an undergraduate researcher (PSYC90 & PSYC93) along with volunteering and managing the lab. My masters research was regarding the neuropsychological aspects of intraindividual variability of high functioning individuals. My PhD is focused on cognitive functioning and it's relation to real world Activities of Daily Living (ADL) along with the development of a multi-factorial, virtual reality cognitive measure with positive ecological validity. My goal is to pursue a career in which I can apply my theoretical knowledge within a clinical setting; clinical neuropsychologist.
Undergraduate Students
Claudia Szabuniewicz
I am currently finishing up my HBSc at the University of Toronto Scarborough, specializing in mental health studies and majoring in Neuroscience. I have been volunteering in Dr. Zakzanis' lab since the Winter of 2012 and am currently undertaking a supervised study. I have a deep fascination with a number of areas within neuropsychology and psychopathology, including, but not limited to the emotional processing and the implications of cognitive deficits and dysfunction on social cognition and real world functioning in clinical populations (e.g. traumatic brain injury, schizophrenia). In the future, I hope to integrate my research interests within an applied setting.
Kathryn Kalahani-Bargis
I am in the Specialist Co-op Program in Mental Health Studies here at UTSC and am currently pursuing my Hons. B.Sc. In Fall 2012 I returned from my work term at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and began volunteering in Dr. Zakzanis' lab. I'm looking forward to new experiences with virtual reality cognitive measures as they pertain to ecological validity. I'm truly enthusiastic and passionate about mental health issues and my current interests include abnormal and clinical psychology, with a particular interest in dementia and schizophrenia. In the future, I hope to obtain a PhD in Clinical Neuropsychology.
Shakira Mohammed
I am currently pursuing my H.B.Sc. in the Mental Health Studies Specialist Co-op program here at UTSC. I am working on a supervised study with Dr. Zakzanis, where we are investigating the effort exerted by undergraduate students during neuropsychological testing. I am very passionate about mental health and my interests include: clinical psychology, and clinical neuropsychology, with a particular interest in psychometry. I hope to become a psychological associate and work in a clinical and/or applied setting.
Ray Astaphan
I recently completed my H.B.Sc in the summer of 2012 from the University of Toronto Scarborough (Department of Psychology) in Neuroscience (Major) and Psychology (Major). I began volunteering in Dr. Zakzanis' lab in March 2012 initially as a research assistant investigating the effects of a sleep aid (Pillow) on an individual’s mood and cognition. My volunteer experience thus far has led me to develop an even greater interest and appreciation for neuropsychology. Ultimately, I am hoping to attend medical school eventually becoming a neurologist.
Paul Klas
I am an undergraduate student at University of Toronto Scarborough in the process of completing a double major in Neuroscience and Mental Health Studies. I began volunteering at Dr.Zakzanis's lab in Summer 2010, assisting with a number of studies and performing neuropsychological testing, and plan on undertaking a supervised study in the near future. My research interests include clinical and abnormal psychology, with a particular interest in schizophrenia and the other psychotic disorders. After graduating, my goal is a career that involves both research and clinical practice. Volunteering in the lab has been a great experience and I encourage all students to seek out such opportunities.
Steven Hanna
I am working toward a B.Sc (Hons) with a double major in Neuroscience and Mental Health Studies. I have had the opportunity to work in several laboratories since starting my degree and have gained experience in fields such as clinical nutrition, behavioural genetics, and cancer stem cell research. During my third year at UTSC I completed a supervised study with Dr. Zakzanis and am looking forward to a thesis project this year.
Krysta Mc Donald
I am pursuing my H.B.Sc. in the Psychology Specialist Behavioural Disorders Co-op program here at UTSC and have been volunteering in Dr. Zakzanis' Clinical Neuropsychology Lab since September 2008. I am currently investigating the Behavioural Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome (BADS) neuropsychological test, as well as assisting the other members with their projects. My interests pertain to the more severe brain-derived pathologies including, but not limited to, schizophrenia, amnesia and personality disorders. Ultimately, I hope to become a clinical neuropsychologist in a hospital setting with the opportunity and ability to aid a diverse patient population.
Emnet Gammada
I am currently looking forward to finishing my H.B.Sc degree in a specialist program in psychology at the University of Toronto at Scarborough. I have been deeply fascinated with the field of mental health ever since I stepped into my first psychology class here at UTSC. My interests include abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, and clinical neuropsychology. This year I am working on a supervised study (PSYC90) with Dr. Zakzanis, where we are investigating to see whether there is dissociation between neuropsychological malingering and exaggeration of psychiatric symptoms in patients that have suffered mild traumatic brain injury.
Sathya Amirthavasagam
I am currently pursuing my H.S.Bc in Neuroscience (major) and Mental Health (major) at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus and have been volunteering in Dr. Zakzanis' Clinical Neuropsychology Lab since February 2009. My interests include clinical and forensic neuropsychology with a particular interest in abnormal psychology. I have recently completed a supervised study (PSYC90) with Dr. Zakzanis investigating whether socioeconomic status holds any predictive relationship with cognitive validity measures. I hope to one day apply my knowledge within a clinical setting while continuously researching and expanding my understanding of neuropsychology.

I received my H.B.Sc. in a Psychology Co-op specialization at the University of Toronto Scarborough in 2011. I joined the lab in the summer of 2010, and recently completed my thesis project on the neuropsychological test-taking effort of undergraduate students. I am passionate about the field of clinical neuropsychology, with specific interests in cognitive aging, traumatic brain injury, and malingering. In the near future, I hope to continue my studies in graduate school and ultimately pursue an integrated scientist-practitioner career in clinical neuropsychology.
Matt Vandermeer
I am currently entering into my first year of graduate study, working towards a Masters degree in Counselling Psychology at the University of Western Ontario. Prior to this, I completed my H.B.Sc. in Mental Health Studies and Integrative Biology at UTSC. During my time at UTSC I had the amazing opportunity to volunteer in Dr. Zakzanis' lab, culminating in the completion of a supervised study paper on the topic of virtual reality testing in TBI patients. Although I am no longer physically part of the lab, I do continue to collaborate and stay in contact with it’s members. I am interested in the physical and cognitive effects of anxiety disorders, and hope to pursue research in this field as part of my studies at UWO. In the future I hope to follow a researcher-practitioner model of mental health studies, whereby I can be an active producer and consumer of psychological research.
