UTSC Graduate Student Travel Grant

The Office of the Vice-Principal, Research will provide a travel grant of up to $400 per student per year (for travel that takes place after May 1, 2012) to support graduate student travel and registration expenses to attend and present research results at academic conferences.

The travel grant application must be submitted within the fiscal year (May 1 – April 30) in which the conference took place.

The travel grant may support more than one conference up to the $400 grant maximum, however the money cannot be carried forward to the next fiscal year if not claimed.

Student Eligibility

Eligible students include all graduate students who are registered in a University of Toronto graduate progam at the time of the conference and identified in ROSI as based at the University of Toronto Scarborough. To be identified in ROSI, students must have completed and submitted an SGS Campus Affiliation Form. Students may receive only one travel grant in each year of enrollment beginning May 1st and ending April 30th.

Conference attendance must take place prior to completion of the graduate program requirements. Students will not be supported for attendance at a conference that takes place after the thesis defence date.

Grant Purpose

Travel grants will be provided to fund graduate student travel to attend and present their original research (e.g. research talk or poster contribution) at academic conferences. This research will comprise part of their degree program, and will have been completed under the primary supervision of a UTSC principal investigator.

Eligible expenses include transportation, accommodation, registration fees. Per diem meal allowances are not eligible. All expenses must be supported with original receipts.

Other research travel purposes, such as off-site data collection, collaboration, or visits to other research facilities are ineligible. Expense eligibility will be in accordance with the University of Toronto and tri-council grant policies.

Following the conference and the provision of original receipts for travel expenses, reimbursement will be made by electronic deposit to the graduate student or to the appropriate account of the graduate student's faculty supervisor, as applicable.

Application Process

Application for a graduate student travel grant consists of:

  1. a completed one-page application form,
  2. a copy of the research abstract for the conference,
  3. original expense receipts, including boarding passes if airfare is being claimed,
  4. and a signed University of Toronto Expense Report.

If you are being reimbursed from other sources in addition to this travel grant, please work with your UTSC departmental financial officer to coordinate a single expense claim.

Please keep a copy of your travel grant application form and expense receipts on file. Your complete, original application must be submitted to Tannisha Lambert in the Office of the Vice-Principal, Research in Room AA 427, Arts and Administration Building.

UTSC Graduate Student Research Award

The Graduate Student Research Award is a financial award open to all research-stream graduate students who are presently enrolled in the School of Graduate Studies, are supervised (or co-supervised) by University of Toronto Scarborough-based faculty, and who are currently identified on ROSI as UTSC affiliated.

Graduate Student Research Award Guidelines

  1. Purpose

    The purpose of the award is to recognize the research activities of graduate students as well as their overall contribution to the University of Toronto Scarborough.

  2. Eligibility

    The award is intended for Masters students and for PhD students who are not normally in their final year of study at the time of application. The award is open to all research-stream graduate students:

    1. currently enrolled in the School of Graduate Studies;
    2. supervised (or co-supervised) by U of T Scarborough-based faculty; and
    3. currently identified on ROSI as UTSC affiliated
  1. Application and procedure

    Application for the award will be made by the graduate student and will consist of the following:

    1. Personal data - name, UTSC department, current program (master's or doctoral) including start date, U of T graduate department, and and past degrees (include institution(s) and dates);
    2. Annotated list of research contributions (research contributions include publications, presentations, intellectual property, data collections, etc.). Include full references with authors, title, journal and volume/book chapter, page numbers and year with a description of each item that briefly outlines the main finding of the research contribution and your role in it;
    3. 1 page (maximum) description of graduate student research project and/or summary of accomplishments - write up your research project in clear, non-specialist language such that a general scholarly audience can understand the research, and also give the wide implications of your project;
    4. List of extracurricular activities that are directly related to U of T Scarborough; and
    5. Signed reference letter on department letterhead from a U of T Scarborough faculty member familiar with the applicant's work that includes a statement as to the extent of the graduate student's involvement in the generation of his/her research contributions (e.g. conceptualization of research design, execution of research, data collection, interpretation of data, etc.).

     

  2. Application deadline: Friday, April 26th, 2013

    Applications must be submitted electronically in PDF format to to the Office of the Vice-Principal, Research c/o Debbie Bilinski (dbilinski@utsc.utoronto.ca). Reference letters in PDF format may be submitted directly by the faculty member to Debbie Bilinski.

  1. Nature and conditions of the award

    When deemed appropriate, up to 2 cash awards of $1,000 will be given out annually, one each for a masters and a doctoral student, but two in a single category are permitted. It is not intended that the award be included as part of the recipient's minimum income (funding package) as specified by the university and the relevant graduate department.

  2. Guidelines for making the award

    The award will be made on the basis of the following criteria:

    1. quality of the project and/or research accomplishments;
    2. applicant's research track record and research potential; and
    3. other examples of leadership.
  1. Selection committee

    The Selection Committee shall consist of UTSC Research Advisory Board members and the Vice-Principal, Research who will act as Committee Chair.
