Q. What payment options are available to pay fees?

University of Toronto fee payments are made at the bank (ie. in person, automated teller machine, on-line or phone banking etc.). After you've chosen your courses, a fees invoice will be mailed to you. Ensure your mailing address on ROSI is correct. You will need this invoice to pay your fees, as it includes your personal account number with the University where payment will be directed. Ensure that you pay your fees by the appropriate session deadline. For more information, click here.

Q. What financial aid is available to my son or daughter?

OSAP
The Ontario Student Assistance Program - a government loan program is available to students. For detailed information about applying for OSAP please click here.

Deadlines to apply for OSAP
In order to get your documents on time for the beginning of classes the deadlines are May 31st for returning students and June 30th for new students. Students can still apply for OSAP after theses deadlines, however no later than 90 days before the end of the study period.

UTAPS
University of Toronto Advance Planning for Students is also available. UTAPS provides a grant to cover financial need recognized but not fully met by the government assistance programs. The assessment criteria will be based on the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP).

Bursary and Grant Information
Bursaries, which are also often called grants, are non-repayable sums of money provided by the University to assist students who encounter financial difficulties. For more information about bursaries at UTSC please click here.

When to Apply
There are bursaries applications deadlines in all 3 sessions, usually in November, February and June of each year.

About Scholarships
Scholarship are financial awards given to a student on the basis of academic merit or standing.

Entrance Scholarships and Awards
All applicants to UTSC are automatically considered for entrance scholarships, no separate application is required. There are many other external scholarships that can assist students with their educational costs.

Q. How does my son or daughter register for courses?

Course registration occurs on line through ROSI, the Repository of Student Information. ROSI contains data relating to a student's admission to and academic performance at the University of Toronto. To gain access you have to provide a valid student number and a valid Personal Identification Number.



General


Q. Who can we call to find out our son or daughter's marks or how they are doing at the University?

The University cannot release student records to anyone but the student. The University is not able to discuss particular details about the student's records and experience with a parent, guardian or family member. This is in accordance with the right to privacy and access to personal information in section 54 (c) of the Municipal Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act. Q. If my son or daughter is not feeling well or requires medical or personal counseling services for an on going condition where can he or she go?

The Health and Wellness Centre found in the S-Wing provides medical care and personal counseling along with a number of presentations related to personal wellness such as stress management and health awareness.

The Mission of Health & Wellness Centre is to assist students to achieve their "personal best" physical and emotional health, thereby supporting them in successful pursuit of their academic goals.

Q. In the event of a crisis or emergency how can I make contact with my son or daughter?

In the event of an emergency contact the University Police at 416-287-7333. The University Police do offer an Emergency Contact Service to students, faculty and staff. A student can complete the registration form on line. Information provided will help the University Police locate the student on campus to relay the message. more ...

Safety


Q. What safety precautions are in place if my son or daughter is on campus late attending class or studying?

There are programs on campus designed to promote safety on campus. It is also critical that each community member practice safety precautions. Students walking on campus after dark should take advantage of the UTSC Patrol service. Students can call UTSC Patrol at 416-287-7022 and a licensed, uniformed security guard or Special Constable will meet the student at their location and walk them to their desired destination. Hours of Operation are 24/7/365.

Q. If my son or daughter is having difficulty with their academics where can they go for help?

There are a variety of academic resources available on campus to support students. Students are encouraged to take advantage of services to have an organized approach to academics and to minimize stress and difficulties.

Q. How necessary is a laptop computer for my son or daughter?

A laptop provides convenience due to its portability, allowing a student to work in places throughout the campus. There are various locations on campus where a student can take advantage of wireless access to the internet. If group work is often a part of a course of study a lap top can be used on site while working with the group. In this case having a lap top can be advantageous. It may be wise to talk to senior students in the same faculty or contact the academic department to learn about the amount of group work or need for a laptop.

There are computer labs on campus for students to use for course work, therefore having a computer is not absolutely necessary. A personal desktop can be more economical than a laptop to purchase. Computer labs are available if students wish to access the internet or do work while on campus.

Q. Will my son or daughter be able to sleep and study in residence?

Student Housing & Residence Life has policies and programs in place to support the academic goals of residents. Quiet Hours are in place to help monitor level of noise. Residence Advisors are senior students who live in residence to provide guidance to students and to uphold community standards. Programming and community development in residence focuses on the integration of the academic and social experiences of students' lives on campus. Residence strives to create learning communities that provide opportunities to meet faculty, student service providers and peers pursuing similar academic studies.


Q. What if my son or daughter does not get along with his or her roommates?

If a resident is finding that roommate relationships are strained or difficult a resident can visit a Residence Advisor. The RA will listen and guide the student through developing ways to resolve the issues. As a first step the resident will be encouraged to communicate concerns to roommates. If an issue remains unresolved it can be brought to the Residence Life Coordinator.



Commuter Students

Q. How can my child become involved in the campus community?

A variety of services and clubs offer student involvement opportunities. Students can join a variety of campus clubs to suit their interests and to explore new opportunities. The Scarborough Campus Students' Union offers a number of student leadership opportunities and hosts a number of events throughout the year. Student jobs on campus are also available and postings can be found

Work-Study provides part-time job opportunities in a wide variety of offices throughout the campus. To be eligible for the positions, students must demonstrate financial need. Work-Study positions are advertised early in September in Scarborough's Career Resource Centre (S302) or on the Career Centre's website.


Q. Will my son or daughter have difficulty with meeting people?

Meeting people does take some effort on the part of each student and university community member. Although meeting people may seem like an overwhelming feat at first, making the effort will be worth the while as community members are eager to meet others and to be engaged members of the community. Each department on campus, the Scarborough Campus Students' Union and various campus clubs appealing to a variety of interests of many opportunities to meet others and to become involved. Students can be aware of opportunities through postings all over the campus and on the UTSC Intranet.
