While Sociology emerged from the 19th-century as the definitive chronicler and interpreter of modern, or industrial, society, it remains at the cutting edge of contemporary social analysis. Attractive to the naturally curious, sociology challenges assumptions that we make about ourselves and the society in which we live. Sociologists study ‘the big’ issues of the day, pioneering debates about socially structured inequality, postmodernism, globalisation, gender, sexuality, the changing nature of work, family and the life course, race, immigration and multiculturalism, crime and punishment, among other topics.

Research and teaching interests include: the future of the city; the meaning and significance of global warming; transnational migration, immigrant politics, immigration employment, and precarious work; the policing of homelessness and begging; the racial profiling of young people; youth gangs; rap music and its audiences; the cultural production of feminist bookstores; gender and social stratification in higher education; the causes and consequences of violence against women; stratification and social change.
