2008

City Studies initiates a series of courses designed to interface students with the residents of Scarborough’s inner city.

Ted Relph is appointed acting Chair for a two year term.

Brigitte Gonzalez joins the Department.

The Centre for Ethnography begins with a series of lectures by prominent scholars.

The total full course equivalents (FCEs) taught by the Department is approximately 10,000. There are 43 distinct programs and 210 courses taught by the Department.

2007

The Center for Ethnography is established under the initiative of Professor Lambek.

Professor Minelle Mahtani is awarded FRGSC.

2006

Michael Lambek is awarded Tier I Canadian Research Chair.

2005

Teresa Dawson, Director, Teaching & Learning Services and Senior Lecturer in Geography, receives the University of Toronto Scarborough Teaching Award for 2005-2006.

Professor Aysan Sev’er serves as the ‘Advisor to the Principal on ‘Equity Issues’ from 2005-2008. The mandate of this position included student, faculty and staff concerns on any equity issue including race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, faith, gender and disabilities.

2004

John Miron appointed Chair of the Department until 2008. During the next four years, the administration staff consists of Janet Roopnarinesigh, Anne-Marie Smith, Audrey Glasbergen and Gail Copland.

Professor Aysan Sev’er’s book, Fleeing the House of Horrors, published by the U of T Press (2002) receives the "Canadian Women’s Studies Award". In the year the award was given, there were 16 book nominations across from Canada.

2003

John Hannigan becomes Acting Chair of the Department from February, 2003 to December 2003.

Sue Horton appointed interim Dean University of Toronto Scarborough.

John Miron becomes Acting Chair from January to June of 2004. Starting on July 1st 2004.

Anne-Emanuelle Birn is awarded Tier II Canadian Research Chair (CRC).

Ted Relph is awarded the Canadian Association of Geographers – Distinguished Scholar award.

Members of the Department attend the 2003 Planning Retreat at the Miller Lash House.

2002

The Division of Social Sciences renamed a Department. As part of a university wide change in administrative organization.

The Journal of Women’s health & Urban Life: An International and Interdisciplinary is officially launched in May 2002. Founder & General Editor is Aysan Sev’er, Sociology.

2001

New Interdisciplinary programs were put forth: City Studies, Health Studies, New Media, International Studies.

Sue Horton is appointed Chair of the Division.

Michael Bunce is the Recipient of Faculty Teaching Award for 2001-2002.

Audrey Glasbergen was the 2001 recipient of the Patrick Phillips Staff Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to U of T Scarborough.

Professor Michael Lambek and Audrey Glasbergen become members of the Great Minds. The Great Minds program is an outgrowth of the University of Toronto’s 175th anniversary celebration.

2000

Michael Lambek elected to Royal Society of Canada.

Student enrolment begins to increase following the new initiatives by the Campus as well as the beginning of the ‘double cohort’ of students arising from the elimination of grade thirteen.

Rapid enrollment growth begins in 2001

1999

Ron Manzer is appointed acting Chair.

Ted Relph is appointed Associate Principal for campus development.

Gail Copland joins the Division as Business Officer.

1998

Aysan Sev’er receives the "Person’s Day Award". This National award commemorates the first time Canadian women became considered as ‘persons’ under the law (1929). This award is annually awarded by LEAF (Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund of Canada) and WIN (Women’s International Network).

Ron Manzer wins the Principal’s Research Award.

1997

Ted Relph is re-appointed Chair of the Division.

1996

David Cook assumes the position of Acting Chair of the Division.

1995

Ted Relph is awarded the Ralph Campbell Award.

1992

The Physical Geographers move out of Division of Social Sciences to the Division of Physical Sciences.

1991

Ted Relph is appointed Chair until 1996.

As part of a major academic re-organization, Economics and Commerce are split from the Division to form the core of a new Division of Management.

1986

John R. Miron is appointed Chair of the Division until 1991.

Rorke Bryan is subsequently appointed Dean of the Faculty of Forestry.

1985

Ronald Blair, Political Science receives the University of Toronto Scarborough Teaching Award

1984

The co-op program in International Development Studies is created and offers an 8 to 12 month long placement in a developing country. This program is unique in Canada.

1982

Rorke Bryan is appointed Chair of the Division.

1980

Audrey Glasbergen joins the Division

1979

Robert L. James, Sociology receives the University of Toronto Scarborough Teaching Award for 1978-79.

1978

S. John Colman, Political Science receives the University of Toronto Scarborough Teaching Award for 1978-79.

1977

Professor Roger O’Toole becomes Associate Chair of the Division.

1976

Following the lead of Professor Schroeder, Professor Marti Latta begins to offer a field course in Archaeology that allows students from all three campuses training excavation techniques, artefact preparation and conservation, field surveying and recording methods. The image below is the field school that ran in the early 1980s.

Ronald Blair is appointed the Chair of the Division. During his administration the Co-op program in public administration was introduced to the Division. This was the first Co-op program at Scarborough

1973

The Division Relocates: A large portion of the Social Sciences move over to the B wing.

1972

U of T Scarborough separates from the St George Faculty of Arts and Science at the undergraduate level.

Lorie Tarshis was the Chair of the Division of Social Science. In 1974-76 Tarshis appoints C.L. Sparrow as the Associate Chair

1971

Peter Cave was the Interim Divisional Chair of Social Sciences. From 1971 to 1991 Social Sciences consists of Anthropology, Geography, Political Science and Sociology as well as Economics and Commerce

Professor Michael Bunce conducts a field trip to Eastern Ontario in GGRB17 – Rural Land Use Studies.

1969

Arthur Kruger was the first ‘regular’ chair was Professor Arthur Kruger, also a scholar of trade unions and collective bargaining. He subsequently became Dean of Arts and Science, Principal of Woodsworth College, and head of OISE/UT.

From 1969 to 1973, the faculty of the Division of Social Sciences was located both the H wing and S wing.

1968

Noah Meltz was the Interim Divisional Chair of the Social Sciences and an economist.

1966

The first year begins with 500 students. Scarborough College’s (later University of Toronto Scarborough) was openend as a new campus of the University of Toronto. The first building is made up of the Sciences and Humanities wings (S-wing and H-Wing).
