Accident Reporting

In the event of an accident, the driver must stop immediately and investigate. The Metropolitan Toronto Police (EMERGENCY NUMBER 911) must be called immediately for all accidents involving:

  • Personal injury or death
  • Criminal activity (e.g. impaired driving, stolen vehicle, assault, etc.)
  • Federal, provincial or municipal vehicles (including TTC)
  • A person who is uninsured or is a suspended driver
  • Vehicles transporting dangerous goods
  • Damage to private, municipal or highway property

All accidents involving property damage that colllectively exceeds $1,000 must be reported at a Collision Reporting Centre. Collision Reporting Centres are a police facility created to help motorists in reporting vehicle collisions.

Drivers involved in collisions involving property damage must report within twenty-four (24) hours to a reporting centre, where a police officer will inspect and take pictures of the vehicle damage. The driver must then complete a government collision report, which is reviewed by a police officer.

Before going to a Collision Reporting Centre the driver must:

  1. Check to ensure that police presence is not required (see above list).
  2. If it is safe to do so, remove the vehicles from the roadway.
  3. Exchange information with the other involved parties including independant witnesses. (Names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance companies and vehicle particulars, etc.)
  4. Contact Budget’s claims department or the University’s Risk Management & Insurance Department (see below details).
  5. As soon as possible, bring your vehicle to the most convenient Collision Reporting Centre.
  6. Bring documentation including driver’s license, rental contract, ownership, insurance, etc.
