BGY A01H -
Introductory Biology -
Part I focuses on cell structure and function
as well as cellular metabolism. The First
Half of the course
provides an overview of the composition, structure and function of the
major organelles. The nucleus is examined
in detail stressing its role in cellular function, cell proliferation
and inheritance. In the Second
Half of the course, the principles of cellular metabolism
are explored using the photosynthetic and respiratory pathways as
two important examples. The role of chloroplasts and mitochondria
are examined. Finally key aspects of plant structure and function
are discussed. The diversity of living organisms, especially
bacteria, protists and plants, are considered throughout this course.
