Study of Economics

Economics studies how consumers, producers, government and institutions interact in a market economy to provide and allocate goods and services. Economics also studies how society might create the most efficient use of scarce resources so that private and social welfare may be improved. Economics acknowledges that these processes change over time and might, in certain circumstances, fail to function in an optimal fashion. Economics employs logical and sometimes mathematical analysis to investigate how decisions (choices) are arrived at by economics agents, such as individuals, firms, governments and institutions, in the face of incentives and resource constraints. Without scarcity of resources there is no real economic problem. So Economics is at its core a discipline about how to deal with scarcity.

The reasons to study Economics include:

  • To learn analytical and critical thinking skills
  • To acquire the ability to obtain relevant data from numerous sources
  • To become competent in various data analysis techniques
  • To obtain writing and reporting skills
  • To become able to recognize economics trends and patterns and relate these to the proper causal links
