Management student wins international women in business award - Samantha Seto, a third-year management co-op student, has won a prestigious international award that recognizes young women who have demonstrated leadership and excellence in academics and extracurricular activities in the pursuit of careers in business. DECA Victory - Developing Excellence Celebrating Achievement— these are the very words that described the sweeping victory captured by U of T Scarborough students competing in the DECA U Provincial Competition 2010. It was no surprise that 22 medals were seized through fierce competition with 12 other university chapters across Ontario. [Read more]
Our finance team, Cici Liu and Derrick Fung, were the 3rd place winners at the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition finals held January 7-9, 2010 at Queens’ University. The ICBC, which officially started in 1978, has been recognized as one of the most competitive undergraduate case competitions in Canada, and this year was able to attract over 150 submissions from Canadian and International universities. •Special recognition goes out to Management Professor, Chris Bovaird and Management Program Advisor, Shehna Javeed, who co-hosted the first-ever business session for children who participated in this year's Take Your Daughters/Sons to Work Day which took place on Thursday, April 23, 2009. The session was held in the Management Building. Children were given a business challenge on the topic of Business Decisions for a Lemonade Stand. The children formed small groups to set up and make decisions to organize their “small business” – a lemonade stand. They had to make choices about the name of the business, develop advertising posters and come up with strategies to attract customers, the cost of their supplies and the price of their end products and how those would affect their profit margins. Then they got a “taste test” of their lemonade at the end. Shehna Javeed and Christine Rupnaraine from the Department of Management served on the planning committee for this exciting event. • On February 11, 2009, the Department of Management in collaboration with the Math & Statistics Learning Centre (formerly know as the Math & Statistics Help Centre) ran the first ever Statistics Learning Session for BBA students enrolled in Quantitative Methods in Economics I & II (ECMB11 and ECMB12). Hosted by Dr. Vinh Quan, Management Lecturer and Dr. Zohreh Shahbazi, Math & Statistics Learning Centre Coordinator, the one-hour session reviewed specific statistics topics including; sampling, interval estimates and hypothesis testing. In addition, Shahbazi highlighted the range of services offered by the Math & Statistics Learning Centre for UTSC students. Management professor, Julie McCarthy has been awarded this year’s Plumptre Faculty Research Fellowship for her proposal on the implications of workplace anxiety.
The Plumptre Faculty Research Fellowship will be presented to McCarthy at an evening reception and lecture this Spring (date and location to be announced). Watch for details on the web site. [Read more].
• On Tuesday, January 27, 2009, BBA students, Amanda Chin-Loy (4th year) and Vicky Zhao (3rd year) attended the annual Marketing Hall of Legends Awards Gala as personal guests of Bryan Pearson, President and CEO, LoyaltyOne AIR MILES Rewards Program. The event which was attended by senior marketing executives from many of Canada’s leading companies honoured and celebrated the accomplishments of successful marketing leaders (i.e. Legends) while providing the opportunity to inspire marketing professionals of the future. • On Saturday, January 24, 2009, U of T Scarborough teams made up of BBA students won first and second place at the University of Toronto Consulting Associations’ Annual Business Case Competition. This was the first time any U of T Scarborough team entered the competition. The first team made up of Derrick Fung, Darya Akulshyna, Hilori Kaloti and Cici Liu scored first place with a prize of $200 while the second team made up by Anastasia Povolotska, Maria Shibaeva, Thomas Snell and Jens Panek placed second with a prize of $100. •DECA U of T proved they were a force to be reckoned with after scoring 12 medals at this year’s DECA U Provincial Conference that took place on January 23rd – 25th 2009 at the Sheraton Centre, Downtown Toronto. This year’s Conference saw 550 competitors from 14 different DECA U Chapters (14 Universities) compete in 16 different business categories. [Read more].
• On Wednesday, January 21, 2009, U of T Scarborough BBA students, Cici Liu, Juan Ma, Alexander McLeod, Alexandru Rascanu and Leslie Yang participated in an informal discussion with Mike Hornbrook, Economics Correspondent for CBC Radio News. The discussion moderated by fourth year BBA student and MESA President, Derrick Fung specifically focused on the shift in governmental policy from a Friedman to a Keynesian economic model in addition to topics surrounding government deficit, market rationality and the current recession.
