Jim Campbell
Jim Campbell is an assistant professor of economics and industrial strategy in the management department, specializing in microeconomic theory and industrial organization. BA (Oxford), AM and PhD (Brown)
Research Interests:
Campbell's research focuses on the role of communication networks in economic settings – studies that become increasingly relevant as online social networks make it more possible to observe and understand communication patterns. "For firms and governments, this will affect communication strategies, but as a researcher, it means that useful data on how people discuss things might soon be available. People talk to their friends, family and colleagues, and I'm interested in how the structure of that communication affects economic decisions. For example, a firm trying to market a product might do things differently if it were able to observe the way consumers will talk about their product after learning about it."
Teaching Interests:
He describes his approach to teaching as favoring "learning based on discussion and writing. I try to encourage students to think critically about the methods and tools of economics," says Campbell. "I like that economics is really a language and methodology – it doesn't presuppose anything, so your work is only as good as the assumptions you make."
