UTSC Finance team takes 3rd place at ICBC

Our finance team, Cici Liu and Derrick Fung, were the 3rd place winners at the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC) finals held January 7-9, 2010 at Queens’ University.  The ICBC, which officially started in 1978, has been recognized as one of the most competitive undergraduate case competitions in Canada, and this year was able to attract over 150 submissions from Canadian and International universities.

finance teamTo achieve this great victory in the final round of the competitions, the finance teams worked within a five and a half hour time constraint to analyze a capital budgeting case where they determined the viability of purchasing specified capital machinery for a carton manufacturing company .  The process involved compiling their analysis and recommendations into a 15-minute PowerPoint presentation, which was then presented to a panel of Judges consisting of Brad Fraser, Director in the BMO Capital Markets’ Diversified Industries Group, Geoff Reeeves, Vice-Chair of Fixed Income and Currencies (FIC) of CIBC Capital Markets, Sean Roberts, an Investment Analyst in the Financial Institutional Group at Goldman Sachs and Rob Hamilton, Senior Account Manager with RBC.  Cici and Derrick were able to undertake this challenge and clearly demonstrated their high degree of financial knowledge and solid understanding of case analysis.

We are very proud of Derrick and Cici, we would like to congratulate them for their great success.  We will also like to recognize the contribution of Professor Syed Ahmed, Senior Lecturer, for his guidance, support and efforts on behalf of the finance team and for coordinating all the UTSC Department of Management’s team entries for the ICBC competition this year.
