Organizational Behaviour & Human Resource Management (OB & HRM)

"The world will not belong to 'managers' or those who can make the numbers dance. The world will belong to passionate, driven leaders — people who not only have enormous amounts of energy but who can energize those whom they lead."  — Jack Welsh

Effective people management is the backbone of all organizations and can differentiate those who thrive from those who merely survive. With a core faculty dedicated to excellence in research and education, the OBHRM area at the University of Toronto Scarborough is committed to advancing the study of organizational behaviour and human resources and creating the next generation of leaders. In addition to hands-on experiences in the classroom, our students have numerous opportunities to apply the skills they learn and develop true leadership abilities through participation in the co-operative education program, the Management and Economics Student Association (MESA), and the numerous networking events that take place in the department each year.

Our goal is to provide our students with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to:

  • Understand how organizations work and how people work in organizations
  • Critically analyze and distinguish between valid HR practices and HR fads
  • Develop strategic HR policies for enhancing recruitment, selection, training, and performance
  • Lead efforts to promote organizational effectiveness
  • Serve as expert sources for all OB and HR-related organizational activities

Students interested in specializing further in Human Resources can take at least 10 other C- and D-level courses (e.g. Recruitment and Selection).  We also offer several additional courses that provide in-depth coverage of contemporary issues in organizational behaviour and human resources (e.g. Diversity in the Workplace; Leadership in the 21st Century).  Most of our senior courses are small and offer multiple opportunities for interpersonal skill development in state-of-the-art facilities.
