2008 News Briefs

• This year's LIVE Conference 2008 was a huge success.  On Novemeber 20 - 21, 2008, more than 150 business students from across the country came to Toronto for a unique management conference organized by students at U of T Scarborough.  The LIVE (Leading Innovative Visions to Execution) conference was held over two days, and was headquartered out of the Courtyard Marriott Hotel in downtown Toronto. The business conference required students to use a range of skills from all of the functional areas of management. [Read more].

• The Department is pleased to announce that Management Professor, Chris Bovaird was nominated in TVO's 2009 Best Lecturer Competition.  More information on the competition can be found here.

• Congratulations to Management alumna, Jasmine Tjandra, who was among the top four highest scorers on the October 2007 Canadian Human Resources Professionals National Knowledge Exam. [Read more].  

• Management professor, Liang Chen has developed a new Accounting Preparation Course designed specifically for new international students. This one-day course was offered for the first time at U of T Scarborough at the start of the fall term. It featured a panel discussion among upper-year international students who excelled in accounting, and who shared their insights about learning challenges and success strategies with first-year students. Professor Chen says the team effort involved in delivering this course demonstrates the commitment of U of T Scarborough to attracting and supporting international students. • In September 2008, Management Professor, Esther Eiling won an award of $1000 for the Best Business Valuation Research Paper at the Northern Finance Association Annual Meetings in Kananaskis Village (see http://northernfinance.org/2008/paperawards.html ). The award was sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators. The title of her paper is, “Industry-Specific Human Capital, Idiosyncratic Risk and the Cross-Section of Expected Stock Returns.”

• Management professor, Chris Bovaird was quoted in a Globe and Mail article on August 6, 2008 about top level employees losing their jobs and bouncing back. The article was titled “Research shows that managers quickly recover after layoffs.” [Read more].

• Management professor, Tim Richardson was interviewed as well by Maclean's magazine in June on the risk of children being exposed to porn on the web, and what measures can be taken to reduce the risk. [Read more].

• Management professor, Sandra Daga was quoted in an article in Metro newspaper on suggestions for students trying to save for back to school.  [Read more].

• On Saturday, July 12, 2008, the Department of Management and the Management Alumni Association (MAA) hosted an alumni event at the Woodbine Racetrack where guests enjoyed an afternoon of sumptuous dining, live thoroughbred horse racing and lively conversation. [Read more].

• Management professor Walid Hejazi, who is cross-appointed to the Rotman School of Management, was quoted in an article by Bloomberg Business News online on June 26. The article is titled “Canada Should Loosen Restrictions, Allow Bank Mergers.” [Read more].

• Congratulations to both Lindsay Chu and Thomas Gingras who were award with the Distinguished Alumni Award for 2007.  Lindsay was recognized for her exceptional achievement as the 2007 Ontario Gold Medalist for the Chartered Accountants' Uniform Final Examination, while Thomas was recognized for his outstanding achievement as a 2007 Honour Roll recipient for the Chartered Accountants' Uniform Final Examination.

• On Tuesday, June 10, 2008 the Co-op BBA Program at U of T Scarborough received raving reviews in the University of Toronto Bulletin.  The article which features current MESA President and Co-op BBA student, Derrick Fung highlights the Co-op advantage for students in today's competitive and diverse business world.  [Read more].

•Congratulations to Adeel Ahmed, a fourth year Management Co-op student, who won third place in the “CGA Ontario One-Hour Accounting Contest Tier 2 – Intermediate and Advanced Financial Accounting Questions” in April 2008. There were close to 1,200 students registered for this contest. He won a cash award and a scholarship towards the CGA program of professional studies. •In May, Tim Richardson, senior lecturer in management, was interviewed in the Toronto Star and on AM640 radio regarding political risk, related to the international business and e-commerce courses he teaches.  [Read more].

• At the Celebrating Academic Excellence event on May 29, 2008, Management Professor, Liang Chen was recognized as the recepient of the Alice L. Beeman Award in Communications and Marketing for Educational Advancement for Best Thesis, Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

• On May 21, 2008, Management Professor, David Zweig's article titled, "Are personality tests infiltrating your work?" appeared in the Report on Business section in the Globe and Mail.  The article which highlights the consequences of using personality tests in recruiting, training and promoting staff also features Zweig's answers to related questions from various Globe and Mail readers.  [Read more].

•In the mid-May 2008 issue of The Bottom Line, Management Professor, Liang Chen's article titled, "Teaching offers enriching option" was featured.  The article focuses on research about university students' attitudes towards accounting as a career, and as a result, the impact on the demand for teaching faculty who possess dual professional qualifications (e.g. accounting/management and education). Tim Richardson, was quoted a Toronto Star article titled "Watchdog revists Internet oversight" on May 16, 2008.  [Read more].  

•Economics Professor, Gordon Cleveland has been quoted in articles related to his recent report on the role of the private sector in the delivery of child care, titled "If it don't make dollars, does that mean it don't make sense?"  Cleveland's research was featured in the Scarborough Mirror and was also published on the CBC website.

• On April 5, 2008, Management Professor, Julie McCarthy was quoted in the National Post in an article about workplace flattery. McCarthy, who is cross-appointed to the Rotman School of Management, said that flattery is okay in the workplace but only if it is sincere, "It's okay to say, 'I really like what you're wearing today.' But if the sole purpose is just to get ahead and you really don't believe it, it's unethical and transparent." [Read more].

• Management Alumnus, Matthew Ma, was awarded the prestigious Ontario Graduate Scholarship this past April.

• In April, Management Professor, Julie McCarthy, was awarded the Plumptre Award for her winning proposal - "Public Policing in Canada: Police Officer Reactions to the Promotion Exam Process."  Her award will result in a paper that will be presented as the Plumptre Lecture, this coming Fall.  McCarthy, beat out four other very strong proposals for this competition, all of them testimony to the research strength of the Management Department.

 

• Management Professor, Tim Richardson was quoted in several newspapers on March 29 on Canadian-U.S. pricing differences on ecommerce web sites. Publications included the Edmonton Journal and the National Post. He also did a television interview on the topic of identity theft for the iChannel.

• In the March 25, 2008 issue of the U of T Bulletin, Management student, Jennifer Zhu, was recognized as the recepient of the Jon Dellandrea Awards for International Students.

• The article, "Love: It's all in the DNA, U.S. firm says; Matchmaker pairs up by immune system" published by the Toronto Star on February 14 featured an expert comment by Tim Richardson.  [Read more]

•On February 21, 2008, Management Professor, Esther Eiling gave a 2-hour talk to the Toronto CFA Society on Global Investment Strategies.  She has two upcoming talks in Oakville and Kitchener/Waterloo. Click here to see the flyer. 

 

•On February 16, 2008, Economics Professor, Walid Hejazi, who is also cross-appointed to the Rotman School of Management, was quoted in an article which appeared in the Brandon Son titled, "Business groups calls on Canadian governments to enact domestic buying rules." [Read more]

•Economics Professor, Walid Hejazi was also quoted in an article titled "Continent (again) coupled to the U.S." on January 22, 2008 in the Globe and Mail. The article which highlights national economies and how they are tied to the recent events in the United States is available to subscribers only at The Globe and Mail.

•Co-op Management students Dorinda So and Katherine Chan were mentioned in an article titled "Scarborough gets its fair share" in the Scarborough Mirror on January 15, 2008.  The article, which highlights the study on whether Scarborough receives its fair share of funding and resources in the megacity of Toronto, also sheds light on Dorinda's and Katherine's research on the topic. [Read more] They are also mentioned in an editorial on the same topic titled "No more studies, it's time to take action." [Read more]
