Wine

The subject of alcohol is rather wide ranging and can incorporate a number of issues and interests. Here are a few links and resources that can be used to follow up on particular topics.

Please contact the Manager Food and Beverage Services if there particular subjects which interest you.

Wine:

While there are a variety of alcoholic beverages available to consumers, wine holds longstanding prominence and appeal unmatched by beer or spirits. Below are some links which can provide interesting opportunities to explore wines and winemaking with particular emphasis on the domestic industry.

Brock University’s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute is the home for one of the most sophisticated research programs in the area of winemaking. The Institute’s faculty and program graduates have made a substantial contribution to the development of the domestic industry.

Though there are many common features in quality wines, individual preferences are very subjective. The link below offers a number of notes on some domestic wines. Please note that some wines mentioned may be limited in availability. Smaller wineries do not have their products listed at the LCBO and are only available directly at the winery. Food and Beverage Services does not endorse any of the selections listed or agree with all the opinions expressed at the following site:   http://www.littlefatwino.com/winedb.html

There are too many books and publications on the subject of wine to include here and in fact many are not helpful to consumers in Canada as references are often made to wines which we may never see available. I do suggest that anyone seriously starting off in an exploration of wines and winemaking begin with this:

“The Oxford Companion to Wine”

Jancis Robinson and Julia Harding

Oxford University Press 2006

For the depth and scope, this offers the best introduction to the subject of wine.
