Acting Upon a Needle: Tamil Short Films

Acting Upon a Needle was a survey of short films hailing from the last five years of the Toronto Tamil Film Festival. The screening was preceded by a reception and followed by a panel discussion with Ragunathan M. and Vino Shanmuganathan.

Children's Artmaking Workshop: Materials
10 - 11 am
The DMG welcomed the kindergarten class from the local child care centre, N'sheemaehn, for an artmaking session. After an art scavenger hunt, in which the children were asked to think about the materials used in the works in the The "C" Word, the kids created their own artworks: sculptures made of popsicle sticks, toothpicks and craft foam. |

Collections Management Workshop

Margaret Haupt, Deputy Director of Collections and Conservation at the Art Gallery of Ontario, led this free workshop for University of Toronto Scarborough students on the fundamentals of collections management, such as art handling, condition reporting, framing, storage and preservation techniques. |

An annual tradition, the DMG hosted the 3rd Rainbow Tie Gala. Presented by the Positive Space Committee, guests enjoyed an evening in support and celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) Faculty, Staff and Students at UTSC. All while dressed in their best rainbow attire! |

Following an exhibition tour of Moment and a lesson on geometric abstraction, the kids created their own abstract masterpieces out of construction paper cut-out shapes, coloured tape and crayon. |

City of Words: Reading Scarborough Writing

Book Launch: The Best Canadian Poetry 2011

The DMG hosted the UTSC launch of The Best Canadian Poetry 2011. Anthology editor and Griffin Poetry Prize nominee Priscila Uppal was joined by three contributors to The Best Canadian Poetry 2011: Barry Dempster, Andrew Faulkner and Daniel Scott Tysdal. Uppal discussed the challenges she faced choosing the best poems and the poets read their work from the anthology, followed by a Q&A. |

Screening: Wasteland

This documentary follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Muniz collaborates with an eclectic group of "catadores" - self-designated pickers of recyclable materials - to create portraits made out of garbage, revealing both dignity and despair as the catadores begin to reimagine their lives. |

Book Launch: Joy of Apex

The DMG hosted the book launch for Joy of Apex, the debut novel by U of T Scarborough student Napatsi Folger about a 10 year old girl growing up in a small town in Canada's Arctic. The author gave a reading and was available to sign copies of the novel. |

DMG Open House & Pop-Up Carnival for ARTSIDEOUT

The DMG marked ARTSIDEOUT, the student-run, multidisciplinary, all-day campus arts festival, with our annual Open House and the DMG Pop-Up Carnival. A roaming booth, the Pop-Up Carnival appeared at a number of locations across campus, serving up facepainting, games, photo opps and popcorn. |
