ACM Studio Visiting Speaker: Bernie Lubell

San Francisco-based artist Bernie Lubell's interactive installations have evolved from his studies in both psychology and engineering. He spoke about a selection of works from his 30 year practice, including a phone booth-confessional communications network, simulations of the human heart and brain, and a cooperative knitting machine. A mix of art and science, the talk also touched upon one of Lubell's inspirations, the work of 19th century physiologist Etienne-Jules Marey. |

Art Smarts: Photo Documentation Workshop

In this workshop, led by artist Toni Hafkenscheid, participants learned the principles and practice of digitally photo documenting both two- and three-dimensional artworks for inclusion in a professional portfolio. Focusing on lighting, the course also covered composition and camera and lens selection. |

Film Screening: Lifelike

Considering the use of taxidermy in David R. Harper's work, the DMG presented a screening of the documentary Lifelike (Dir: Tally Abecassis, 52 minutes). This funny, touching and sometimes absurd film follows a group of taxidermists as they work to perfect their exhibits for the Canadian taxidermy championship. The screening was open exclusively to UTSC staff, faculty and students. |

Children's Artmaking Workshop: Animal Masks

The DMG welcomed the kindergarten class from the local child care centre, N'sheemaehn, for an artmaking session. After a tour of Entre le chien et le loup and a discussion about animals & art, the children created paper animal masks - inspired by David R. Harper's 2012 installation A Fear of Unknown Origins (II).

Culture Cloaked in Skins: How Contemporary Art Brought Taxidermy Back From the Dead
Lecture by Morgan Mavis, Director/Curator, Contemporary Zoological Conservatory

This lecture explored the evolution of taxidermy, from its roots as the trinkets of noblemen to its prevalence in trendy consumer culture. Mavis discussed how contemporary art has given taxidermy a rebirth, changing how we look at these loaded animal objects.

Embroidery Workshop

The Psychology of Memory: Lecture by Professor Steve Joordens

Award-winning University of Toronto Professor Steve Joordens spoke to the themes of memory, recollection and nostalgia found in Souvenir involontaire. A cognitive psychologist whose primary research interests focus on the interaction between conscious and unconscious memory processes, Joordens' talk highlighted the role that certain retrieval cues can play in terms of “involuntarily” resurrecting past memories, whether we like them or not!

In the morning, selected Scarborough artists participated in a live storytelling and poetry recording session. In the afternoon, there was a networking session, following by panel discussion with three local artists about their experiences. |

The Ones Who Walk Away from Cheeseburgers: Thinking critically about our food choices by David Alexander of the Toronto Vegetarian Association

A lecture/workshop exploring "carnism", the psychological phenomenon behind why we love some animals and eat others. David Alexander led a discussion about the consequences of living in a society that assumes eating meat is normal, natural, and necessary, including the effects of modern factory farming on the planet and human health. |

Rita McKeough delivered a performance to accompany The Lion's Share. As the chef at The Lion's Share Diner, she needed fresh stock for the feedlot buffet, so herded wild hot dogs from the wooded areas of campus to the DMG. Following the performance, a reception was held in the gallery. Presented in conjunction with ARTSIDEOUT, the annual student-run, campus-wide festival of the arts.
