Fellow Travellers is an exhibition of work by Studio faculty in the Visual & Performing Arts program at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Featuring painting, drawing, video, sculpture and installation, Fellow Travellers offers the opportunity to learn about the professional practice of the artists in the Studio, all of whom regularly exhibit locally, nationally and internationally.
Yael Brotman was born in Afula, Israel. She emigrated to Winnipeg, and is currently living and working in Toronto. She obtained a Bachelors of Art (Honours) English at the University of Manitoba, a Bachelors of Education in Art History at the University of Toronto and a Masters of Visual Studies in 2007, also at the University of Toronto. Her practice includes drawing, painting and printmaking. Brotman has exhibited in public galleries across Canada, as well as at commercial galleries and artist-run centres including Loop Gallery (Toronto) and the Eastern Edge Gallery (St. John's, NF).
Adam David Brown is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design and completed his Masters of Fine Art at the University of Guelph, Ontario. Adam has exhibited work in Canada, Europe, Central America and the United States including at MKG127 (Toronto) in 2009 and at the Toronto International Art Fair in 2010.
Lee Goreas was born in Toronto, Canada. He received a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Victoria, BC in 1988 and a Masters of Fine Arts from York University, Toronto in 1990. Goreas has exhibited both nationally and internationally, including solo exhibitions at Robert Birch Gallery in Toronto, Stride Gallery in Calgary, and Southern Exposure in San Francisco. He is represented by Birch Libralato Gallery in Toronto.
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Marla Hlady has a degree of BFA (Honours) at the University of Victoria Faculty of Fine Arts in Victoria, BC and MFA at York Univeristy Faculty of Graduate Studies in Toronto, ON. Marla Hlady’s work ranges from site-specific installations to sculpture, drawing and sound pieces. She has shown in both group and solo exhibitions nationally and internationally including The Power Plant Gallery (Toronto), Zabriskie Gallery (New York), Klink and Bank (Reykjavik, Iceland) and The Nunnery (London, England). She is a member of the Flywheel and Peregrine Collectives. Hlady’s soundworks have been commissioned by Art Metropole, Charles Street Video and Arraymusic Ensemble.
David Hlynsky was born in the US and grew up in a small town east of Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Ohio State University from 1965 to 1970, earning a BFA with a major in painting and printmaking. Hlynsky has exhibited his work nationally and internationally including at L.O.F.T. (Berlin), Art Mûr (Montreal), the 2002 Contact Festival, and at the Sadie Bronfman Centre (Montreal). In 2005 he accepted a full time position in the Studio, New Media and Graduate Studies programs at the University of Toronto.
Alexander Irving is a Toronto-based artist who has been exhibiting since 1986. He received a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art in 1987 and his Masters of Fine Arts from York University in 2000. His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions, as well as solo exhibitions at YYZ Artists’ Outlet, Robert Birch Gallery and Diaz Contemporary. Irving has taught at the Ontario College of Art and Design and presently holds the post of Lecturer at the University of Toronto, Scarborough Campus.
Shelagh Keeley is an artist currently living and working in New York and Toronto. She received a Bachelors of Fine Arts from York University, Toronto in 1977. Keeley’s works are held in the collections of numerous Canadian and American institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Walker Art Centre (Minneapolis), National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa) and Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto). She has exhibited extensively in both group and solo exhibitions internationally.
Will Kwan is a Hong Kong-born Canadian artist who spends his time between New York, Toronto and Holland. He received a Bachelors of Arts from the University of Toronto in 2002 and his MFA from Columbia University's School of Arts in 2004. He has presented his projects internationally at venues including the 2003 Venice Biennale; the Contemporary Art Centre Vilnius, Lithuania; Exit Art, New York; Art in General, New York; Cittadellarte-Fondazione Pistoletto, Biella, Italy; and Mercer Union, Toronto.
Tanya Mars is a video and performance artist who has been active in the Canadian art scene since 1973. She was a founding member and director of Powerhouse Gallery (La Centrale) in Montreal (the first women’s art gallery in Canada), editor of Parallelogramme magazine for 13 years, and active in ANNPAC (the Association of National Non-Profit Artist-run Centres) for 15 years. She has performed widely across Canada and internationally. She currently teaches performance art and video at the University of Toronto Scarborough and is part of the graduate faculty of the Master of Visual Studies Program at the University of Toronto. |
