Concurrent Teacher Education Program

FAQ’s

  • I am a Concurrent Education Student enrolled in the French Concurrent Program and I was wondering if there were any prerequisite or recommended courses I could take before enrolling in Equity and Diversity course CTEB01H & Communication and Conflict Resolution CTEC01H, which are required in the 2nd or 3rd year?
  • There are no prerequisites for these two courses. However, you may want to take the Equity and Diversity in Education course before enrolling the Communication and Conflict Resolution course.
  • Besides the required FREA01H & FREA02H course for French and the recommended Psychology courses of PSYA01H PSYA02H, I was wondering if there were any other courses I could take in the first year to help prepare for the French Concurrent program?
  • You should start thinking about your second teachable, no matter what level you think you want to teach at right now. Therefore it is a good idea to start taking courses towards your second teachable, as the following years you will be expected to take a lot more French courses.

It also is a good idea to make a minor or a major of your second teachable.

  • Do you know if course times are decided before course selection dates and if so, how would students prepare courses ahead of time to make sure there isn't a time conflict?
  • If you go to the registrar's office website you should be able to locate the information you are looking for .

  • Is it required for French CTEP students to have a specialist in French, or would a major be enough?
  • No, you have to complete a specialist in French. It is the only option for students to be well-prepared for their future career. Remember that you also have to complete a proficiency test in French for your B.Ed. You'll be thankful then.
  • Is it possible to take the Equity and Diversity Course in the first year?
  • No, it will not be offered. This is a course that you will be able to take either in second or third year.

Tips for success

  • Review course requirements for the full five years in year 1. (for the single Specialist program or the two major programs)
  • Develop a tentative plan for the courses to be taken over the five years of the Concurrent Teacher Education Program B.Sc/ B.A and B.Ed programs.
  • Consider prerequisite courses for each of the courses you intend to take.
  • Familiarize yourself with regulations on exclusions, pre-requisites and co-requisites.
  • There is considerable flexibility in the choice of course sequence in order to ensure that The Concurrent Teacher Education Program students are able to schedule all required courses appropriately. It is particularly important that students consider the scheduling of the B.Ed. degree courses, since these are often more restrictive in scheduling requirements.
  • If you want to become a secondary school teacher, start working toward accumulating the 4 or 5 full university courses in your subject areas as soon as possible. Decide on your second teaching subject and enroll in appropriate courses by the end of Year 1 of the program, or if you enter the program in Year 2, declare your other teaching subject and enroll in appropriate courses as soon as you start the program (see "Anchor Subjects and Other Teaching Subjects for I/S Candidates in CTEP" for more information)
