Linguistics back to top

Students interested in linguistics have the following program options: Major and Minor in Linguistics, Specialist in Psycholinguistics, and Specialist in Linguistics.

The Major program is designed to help students prepare for entry into professional programs in areas with a significant language component, such as speech-language pathology, education, and language teaching.

Students with a particular interest in psycholinguistics can enrol in the Specialist Program in Psycholinguistics, which also provides the best preparation for entry into a graduate program in speech-language pathology. The Specialist Program in Linguistics is designed for students who are interested in a more intensive study of linguistics and for students who are interested in theoretical linguistics.

Languages back to top

U of T Scarborough offers language courses in French, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi and Japanese . We have a vibrant international community of students from across Canada and from around the world, and our students have an exciting range of opportunities to learn languages in both formal and informal settings. An interconnected global economy has made knowledge of languages more important than ever, and language proficiency is indispensable for students seeking international study, work opportunities in Canada and abroad, and post-graduate study.

Registration in all courses with the prefix LGG is subject to the approval of the instructor. Students will be assessed at the beginning of the course in a manner to be determined by the instructor. Students whose level of proficiency in the language is inappropriate for the level of the course will not be approved for enrolment. In some courses, the status of students will be listed as "interim" (INT) until they are approved (APP) by their instructors. Note that students are not permitted to take courses in a language in the wrong sequence, for example taking a lower-level course after having taken a higher-level one.
